May 17th Is the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

It’s about promoting freedom, diversity and acceptance for all of us, regardless of our sexual orientation or our gender identity or expression.

CAS has always taken a strong stand against homophobia. We celebrate that people across the country have been collectively working to end homophobia and transphobia, but there’s still much work to be done.

We are proud to be among the many organizations calling for the inclusion of Transphobia as part of the international name of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia on May 17th.

Our recent Trans Needs Assessment survey revealed that 85 percent of all trans respondents experienced stigma and discrimination at various levels.

Additional work from CAS indicates that stigma and discrimination are still driving the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Canada. According to the 2011 national HIV estimates, gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) represent 50 percent of all Canadians living with HIV. The reality is that in Canada, prejudice and discrimination against gay men persists. Certain social conditions, including intolerance and stigma, intensify the vulnerability of individuals to HIV exposures and infection.

Not all social stigma attached to being transgender, gay, lesbian, bisexual or MSM stems from hatred or fear. Some of it comes from a lack of understanding, or from the personal feelings of discomfort.

Join us in spreading the word about the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia on May 17th to put an end to intolerance and discrimination.

20th International AIDS Conference – Canada Exhibit - Call for Presentations, Volunteers, and Resources

PLEASE SHARE WIDELY

As many of you already know, we are excited to attend the 20th International AIDS Conference, taking place in Melbourne, Australia.

This year, the Canada Exhibit will once again have a prominent placement at the conference and we are expecting to welcome many of the 20,000+ delegates at our exhibit.

The exhibit is an interactive stage for Canadians which showcases insightful presentations, and encourages visitor interaction with our Wishing Tree.

The presentations at the Canada exhibit will be given by civil society, researchers, multilateral organizations and government – the partners in the Canada Exhibit. These presentations will be a combination of PowerPoint presentations, discussion, and question/answer period. If you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, please find attached the necessary forms for you to complete and submit to Patricia Pearson via email at evenement@cdnaids.ca by June 6, 2014.

As in past years, a USB of Canadian HIV/AIDS Resources will be compiled for delegates to take away, and we are currently producing a video that shares the milestones made by Canadians from the past 30 years.

In an effort to create a welcoming and memorable experience at our exhibit, we are searching for dedicated volunteers to represent Canada at our exhibit. If you know of someone who may be the perfect fit for the volunteer role, please share our link to the volunteer form with them:
